Subtitling Video
[edit]Article(s): en:The_Devil_Bat
- Request
- Hi, I've recently found a video called "The Devil Bat". I've recently gotten into adding subtitles to it, but the media player that opens the video isn't very precise, it doesn't measure the milliseconds, different from the SubScript text thing it offers to use to add subtitles. I've already asked this question on the help desk, and a user suggested I try the Graphic Lab/Video and sound workshop. Is there something like an extension that can show the milliseconds/ zoom in onto the video-playing bar? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Insnesnakos (talk • contribs)

- Hello, I'm new to the Wikimedia Commons. I stumbled upon this video and saw that the subtitles were incomplete. I've added roughly two minutes of subtitles but wanted to know if I was doing the best practice and if there was any other information I should take into account when subtitling videos.
- I hope this is the right place to ask a question such as this, but if it's not, I'd be happy to receive the correct location for a question like this.

- Please convert these films from color to black and white. These films were restored and colorized. It is uncertain whether colorization produces a copyright, but moreover the quality is not so good, so I think they would be better in black and white. I could do it if there is a free software which could do that. There is no other version available. --Yann (talk) 16:51, 24 June 2024 (UTC)

Is there a place to request removal of minor nonfree parts of videos?
[edit]Article(s): [[]]

- So for example the video above needs the part from a film at 6:15 removed. It may need further checking and maybe it would be possible to selectively readd/remove audio so only the non-free audio is removed/replaced. Maybe there is a tool for some of these things. Maybe there is a way that such things can be done quickly. --Prototyperspective (talk) 22:05, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

- I have copies I can upload for about half of these (Keaton, Lubitsch, Murnau, Vertov, and maybe The Sheik). I can start on those and then, once that's done, work on trimming the others. Might be a good idea to take another look at Maciste all'inferno though. It isn't {{PD-old-70}}, and I don't think the {{PD-Italy}} claim works the same way for moving images. hinnk (talk) 04:01, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
- I struck through the ones that are finished. For Our Hospitality specifically, the version I have is slightly different (fewer marks and scratches, but otherwise looks identical to me). Unless @Yann is explicitly okay with overwriting it, I think the best approach would be to upload the new version to a separate page, replace the current file in articles, and then leave downloading, trimming, and reuploading the previous version for another day. hinnk (talk) 01:25, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Hinnk: If your version is better, I am fine with overloading. Yann (talk) 06:19, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

How to convert HDR HEVC mov files to WebM for Wikipedia videos (on a Mac)
[edit]Article(s): [[]]

- (details of your request go here...) --Tomhannen (talk) 15:49, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
Does anyone know how to transfer HDR iPhone videos to wikipedia, and maintain their HDR quality? Detailed question here: https://video.stackexchange.com/questions/37638/how-to-convert-hdr-hevc-mov-files-to-webm-for-wikipedia-videos-on-a-mac
- Graphist opinion(s)
- Unfortunately, HDR video isn't really supported. The uploaded file will be transcoded so that readers can select which playback they want, and those transcoded versions will be in SDR. There's an open bug around that conversion process, and currently HDR videos will come out looking like this (compare the default "HD 1080p" playback against "Source" and you'll see what I mean). hinnk (talk) 19:13, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- Can we transcode videos ourselves to 1080p/720p SDR and then upload them to replace the auto transcoded versions? Hym3242 (talk) 11:50, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- You can upload a source video in SDR and all the transcoded copies will come out correctly, but you wouldn't be able to overwrite the transcoded copies themselves if that's what you're asking. The Stack Exchange thread says you're using Handbrake for the conversion, in which case I'd suggest looking for its color space and video encoder settings and adjusting them to be BT.709 and VP9 respectively. hinnk (talk) 19:27, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
Crop / rotate parts of the videos and make it shorter + attenuate background noise in audio track
[edit]
- Request
- I made these two video of a hornet attacking a cicada (my attention was drawn by the loud sound of the struggle). I think they could be assembled and edited into a much shorter video to illustrate the preying behaviour of hornets. However, as they stand, they are both too long (and way too long when combined) and the first 40 seconds of the first video (the struggle) were shot vertically. Is it possible to cut both videos into a very short one, keeping maybe 30 or 40 seconds of footage only and applying some noise reduction filter on the sound track to attenuate the sound of the fan in the background ? I am unfamiliar with video editing software, so I hope my request is not too complicated / vague. --Eiku en exil (talk) 00:05, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

- Remove non-free media in the first 2:00
