...anyone can do any amount of work, provided it isn't the work he is supposed to be doing at that moment.
— Robert Benchley, 1949
Well, it started as a way of avoiding exam revision, let's see where it all ends...
About my images
[edit]I normally license all my images with {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} by default. If you need a dual licensing with {{GFDL}} for any compatibility reason then just drop me a message and it should be no problem. The attribution I require for my images is Lokal_Profil, CC-BY-SA-2.5.
About CC-BY-SA-2.5
[edit]Quote about the ShareAlike requirement from the CC-BY-SA-2.5 license text.
"The above applies to the Work as incorporated in a Collective Work, but this does not require the Collective Work apart from the Work itself to be made subject to the terms of this License."
So in short if you use one of my images on your webpage you need to mention that Lokal_Profil is the author of the image and that the image is under CC-BY-SA-2.5 but you don't need to license the rest of your homepage under the same license. If you however modify an image or use parts (or the whole of it) to create a new image (or movie or something) then that work must be licensed under CC-BY-SA-2.5 and you must state that it's based on an image by Lokal_Profil.
About GFDL
[edit]Apparently GFDL works differently. According to [1] a GFDL image in an article makes the whole article GFDL.
About CoAs on Wikipedia
[edit]The situation is basically this. If the CoA is defined by a blazon (i.e. textual description) then this blazon (and not any specific rendition) is the official coat of arms. Since this text normally doesn't achieve copyright (to simplistic) any correct interpretation (which also follow the heraldic rules) of it is:
- a) A valid version of the coat of arms, even if it looks very little like the version the government might use (hereafter called the official version although this is a misleading name)
- b) can be licensed as the creator wishes.
The problem are however:
- 1) Is the CoA defined by such a blazon or is it actually a logo which looks like a CoA.
- 2) Is the blazon free from copyright, in most countries this would be the case but one never knows.
- 3) Is the image a derivative of the blazon only or is it a "reinterpretation" of the official version, if it is the latter then it's a derivative of this and hence not free.
Regarding edits to the CoAs:
- Changing a wiki version of a CoA to look more like the official version risks turning it into a derivative and as such it could become unfree. Also since any interpretation of the blazon is equally correct it means that any edits which aren't obvious corrections of errors are hard to motivate as unbiased improvements.
- That said there may still be scope for edits/improvements of the images. These will however have to be well motivated and should ideally be agreed upon by the involved editors. If an agreement cannot be reached then there is the possibility to upload a version under a separate filename. Since they are all interpretations they are (ideally) equaly correct.
