Flag of Iola, Kansas
[edit]Article(s): Iola, Kansas, List of city flags in North America
- Request
- Can someone please create an SVG file for the city flag of Iola, Kansas (adopted 11 March 2024), as seen here? Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:46, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

- Snow Lion Fenian, Any evidence that the flag is compliant with Commons' copyright policy? --痛Designism (talk) 04:24, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Since when are city flags copyright protected? It represents the community, and that's why they are per definition in the public domain. If it had been the flag/logo of the municipal or county organisation, it would've resembled a private company logo, and that might have been a different story. But city flags are supposed to be copied and joyfully used to show that you're pride of your own community. The en:United States Flag Code doesn't talk about copyright either, it only prohibits disrespectful (commercial) use. Groetjes, Peter (talk) 22:19, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
- I looked a bit further into it:
- The Flags of counties and municipalities in the United States and Flags of counties and municipalities in Kansas with a copyright restriction are (as far as I've seen) flags with the official seal (or derived from it) or corporate style lettering, which points to flags of the governmental organisation, not the community. That confirms the general distinction between private / public domain flags.
- Iola's City Council of 2024-03-11 (on YouTube, timestamp 13:11) adopted the Clock Tower Flag as their city flag. You can see that their next step is to find out how to proceed further, with things such as licensing/legal details, and that next step will be discussed in the council. In the Council minutes, up to and including the Agenda of Oct 15, 2024, there's no mention of any further step. So I guess it's still in progress.
- Is it a good idea to ask the designer of the flag, whether he'd be willing to upload a svg-version if and when possible? He's not only the designer of the flag, but also a council member, so he should be in the best position to know what can be done and choose an appropriate Commons copyright option. If he'd also upload the second option "Land and Water" design, we'd have a great basis for an Iola Flag article. Groetjes, Peter (talk) 07:49, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Groetjes, Peter: Thanks for your comments. And yes, I do actually think that would be a very good idea, now that you mention it. How do you propose we go about it? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 14:58, 25 October 2024 (UTC)

- Commons' default Chinese font and several other fonts do not have vertical escapements.
- I added the font Noto Sans CJK SC (simplified Chinese). If you want traditional, we can use AR PL Ukai TW.
- Glrx (talk) 20:19, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Glrx I would like traditional, as this is actually written in Japanese, not Chinese. There also seems to be a spacing issue with rendering though, since if I look here I can see the right side font kind of colliding with the center. Thank you. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 07:20, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Immanuelle:
- I set the alignment-baseline to central and removed dominant-baseline: text-after-edge. Does that fix the spacing issue?
- I set the fonts to Noto Sans JP, Noto Sans CJK JP, AR PL Ukai TW, Noto Sans CJK SC, sans-serif (the original SVG specifies sans-serif).
- The file also uses a lot of spaces to set the text position....

- I got a clickable image. But I am not sure if we could change languages or something there Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 16:36, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Immanuelle: Links are only active when the SVG file is displayed. On wiki pages, a PNG file is displayed instead. By changing languages, do you mean changing the targets of links? (e.g., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namu_My%C5%8Dh%C5%8D_Renge_Ky%C5%8D to point to another wiki?) That would be relatively hard and contorted. Making the links point to WikiData would be possible; then the user could click a link to view a wiki article. Better would be a WikiData link that redirected to a wiki article in the user's language. (IIRC, there was a request for such links but I do not think they exist.) Or do you mean you want to translate the Chinese characters to other languages? Glrx (talk) 16:34, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Glrx yeah that functionality would be good.
- The icon is always written in Japanese in all churches/temples whether they do their services in Japanese, English, or other languages. But letting people click the names and redirect to their language articles from wikidata would be great, especially since it means the image would not need to be edited in the future when new language articles get added.
- We could make an english language version of this too, honestly it is a bit difficult for me because I am bilingual enough that I would not know what a monolingual person would want. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 05:26, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

- I don't know enough about PD-textlogo to comment on this, but I should note that at Category:Married with Children there are other similar logos. Spinixster (talk) 08:26, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
- Willing to reduce size to the 14ths and improve quality of the image. The stamp part will still be poor quality. But I can't upload so far.--Vollbracht (talk) 19:46, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- For the stamp, make a high-quality text logo stamp (rounded rect and stencil font) and then apply filters to roughen the edges and add printing defects. Glrx (talk) 19:58, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- Here's a version that uses not-quite-right fonts (Arial Heavy and Stencil, neither on Commons) and textLength (not supported by librsvg). The stamp effect is done with a filter. I cannot convert font to curves on this machine. Glrx (talk) 01:58, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

- We should abstain from a try. The document is a digitized book. The book is an artwork in images and letters. Your request is nothing less but a new edition. It hence will have a new cover design and a new publisher. If we call it a text book it might be published on wikibooks. (The German main page states wikibooks is for non-fiction educational or specialized books though.) Vollbracht (talk) 20:14, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- @SnowyCinema: The PDF contains 312 images (ranging from small empty pages of about 70KB to large pages of around 3MB, totaling 251MB). The PDF itself is 208MB in size, meaning that some compression has already been applied. I’m not sure how the PDF could be compressed further without reducing the quality of the individual images. I used Ghostscript to compress the PDF (option: 'ebook'), and in my opinion, the text is still sufficiently readable. I uploaded the PDF, now about 80MB in size. Feel free to revert the edit if you're not satisfied. ––Mrmw (talk) 04:48, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Mrmw: I appreciate it. It seems that we're having the usual PDF bug now where a PDF shows up as being 0 x 0 on the frontend. This has been ongoing for over a year and I don't know if it's been pushed to the Phabricator. Usually if you purge and null edit it enough times it fixes the issue. But I can't get it to be fixed... - Addendum, originally I requested the file names as the following:
<gallery> File:Coat of arms of Hải Dương.svg|Requested file (Hải Dương). File:Coat of arms of Nam Định.svg|Requested file (Nam Định). </gallery>
- This being "File:Coat of arms of Hải Dương.svg" and "File:Coat of arms of Nam Định.svg", respectively. But I think that it might be better to change the Nam Định one to "File:Coat of arms of Nam Định (black and white).svg", so we have "a base coat of arms" for after I (or someone else) find(s) the (true) colours of the coat of arms of Nam Định in the future. So, the desired file name should include "(black and white)". --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 12:26, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

- None of the images listed there are raster images. They are in fact vector illustrations which accurately resemble medieval illustrations from the catalogues which they were sourced from. A raster in such case would be a jpeg image converted into svg. These are not converted images but actual layered drawings. Kj1595 (talk) 22:16, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- I added the {{TracedSVG}} template at the top of the category, as these are all vector images created with the auto-trace tool. That's what SpinnerLaserz was referring to when he said these look like raster images. These images are better uploaded as .png if they have a transparent background or .jpg if they don't, with the .svg files redrawn manually - basically what the text of the template says. Please don't remove it a second time. ReneeWrites (talk) 06:48, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- You are wrong. These illustrations are all drawn from scratch. The simplest way to test even for a beginner is by opening each coat of arms in a browser, refreshing that browser and seeing all the layers unfold into the whole. Impossible to see this effect with a raster image. There is of course the more sophisticated way of testing each image by uploading them in a vector editor. Kj1595 (talk) 07:18, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Allow me to give you a different example of the Albania relief map I made last year. If you see the map here it shows the vectorized model and the png source file. Now, if I were to simply convert this png file into svg, it would never produce the result of the actual drawn vector map above. Kj1595 (talk) 07:54, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

- Sigh. I hope the edit war on the category page has stopped with the discussion on the talk page.
- I can understand why the category was tagged with {{TracedSVG}}. Even if the SVG are not autotraced, one can claim a vectorization is inadequate due to the size of the SVG. The first file in the category, File:Stema e Abacisë së Ndërfandinës.svg, looks like a photograph and takes 20 MB. The vectorization certainly has a lot of detail. If I look at the image, it shows posterization. I do not see the original image as a good candidate for vector conversion.
- Glrx (talk) 16:25, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Having time to rethink this through, the large mb size has always bothered me as it puts a bandwidth load on the article the images appear in. I will reupload them in larger png format and thereafter nominate the existing ones for deletion. Kj1595 (talk) 20:06, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda emblem

Use the same proportions and shade of blue.

- I would like to request an flag for the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda. The flag is just an emblem on a blue background. Visible here. The smaller photos show a slightly different dressing, but there is no other information about it, so I suspect that this is an unofficial, incidental version that I don't need at the moment. - Done I recommend replacing the L1 file on the Inner West Light Rail article with the new one as well, as the current file contains artifacts of a bitmap trace (smudges around the edges etc.) --Rajix4 (talk) 12:31, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Done for L1 file. The "2" and "3" on the L2 and L3 files still don't seem to quite resemble the shapes used on the official source I provided; perhaps File:TfNSW T2.svg and File:TfNSW T3.svg can be used as a basis for the L2 and L3 files? Thank you! OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 00:58, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

- the current emblem and shields are not accurate and needs to get fixed to match the one shown in the website of the president of Yemen (The image itself)--Abo Yemen✉ 09:49, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- It's worth noting that the emblems currently used by the websites of Yemeni governmental institutions vary greatly, with most of them being extracted from commons itself. Hence I've changed the emblem to what it is today to match what we can guarantee was made by the Yemeni government itself abiding by the constitution by basing my edits to the emblem on the Yemeni passport which appears on its first page (Which has been there since at least 2003). |MK| 📝 12:48, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
